A new beginning

I think the title speaks for itself when it reads 'a new beginning'. I have always been excited at the prospect of something new. Never studying photography before, I decided to pursue photography as a fundamental passion of mine, into something much more worth while, something I will want to do for the rest of my life. Which leaves me here today with the first year of my degree ticked off as I currently beginning the second. This past year has entailed much more than what I first anticipated, broadening my knowledge significantly and creating experiences I will never forget. And of course, not forgetting what I have been able to achieve and acquire up to this moment in time.

Below are some favourite images of mine, taken through the lens of my Nikon D3100 during my first year at university. Enjoy!!

The image above is one of many I took during my first encounter with the media make-up students and the models they transformed. During this specific shoot, the models were altered into mythical creatures, complete with hair, outfit and make-up; working precisely to the individuals needs. I intensified the image using Photoshop Elements 11, converting it into black and white and also increasing the contrast slightly to define the features somewhat. I absolutely love working in black and white, I find something so pure about the way it looks, especially in this image.

Again, this is another image taken from an afternoon with the media make-up students, I had the model face towards the light, emphasising the facial features created for this piece. I wanted to get a sense of the work that went into transforming the models, rather than just photographing them. So I spent almost 5 hours watching and photographing the model being transformed after taking her to the studio to shoot. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and I am delighted with my images.

Again, another few images taken for a media make-up students portfolio in the studio. Using 2 softboxes, one either side and a white background, I created the image above and below. The project was centred around hair and all of the models were sporting amazing hairstyles throughout the afternoon, we were all left wondering how it was even possible to create such big hair!

I am over the moon with how much I have progressed throughout my first year and I will continue to take on board all the advice and constructive criticism given by my lecturers and other students. I am so excited for what the second year entails and other exciting opportunities happening later on in the year.

Until next time! Laura xx
